The Blue Flag is the most widely recognised international mark of quality for coastal destinations. Since its launch in France in 1985, it has become a key instrument for sustainable tourism development. In the 2025 awards Greece earned 623 beaches, 17 marinas and 17 tourist boats, retaining 2nd place worldwide among 52 countries.
Categories of Quality Criteria
The Blue Flag programme rests on four pillars: excellent water quality, robust environmental management, well-organised bather safety, and continuous environmental education. To earn and retain the award, the manager of a beach, marina, or vessel must comply with every specified criterion. For beaches in particular, this includes regular laboratory analysis to confirm “excellent” bathing-water status; the implementation of an integrated cleaning and recycling system; and the provision of adequate infrastructure such as toilets, showers, a first-aid kit, and lifeguard services. The operator must also maintain a pollution-response plan and run ongoing awareness and educational activities that promote environmental stewardship.
